PRINCIPLES TO TEACH ENGLISHTO VERY YOUNG CHILDREN

ACTIVITIES OF THE TWO ARTICLES

The ten essential principles of good learning materials for children are (Juhana,2014):

  1. Young learners have a great curiosity to try new things and to explore concrete to abstract things.
  2. Young learners actively construct meaning from their experiences.
  3. Young learners focus on the immediate here and now context situation.
  4. Young learners have a quite short attention span and are easy to get bored.
  5. Young learners learn through their own individual actions and exploration.
  6. Young learners are keen to talk about themselves, and respond well to learning that uses themselves and their own lives as main topics in the classroom.
  7. Young learners often learn indirectly rather than directly.
  8. Young learners learn best when learning is kept whole, meaningful, interesting and functional.
  9. Young learners learn by thinking in term of theme.
  10. Young learners learn best as a community of learners in non-competitive environment.

The ten rules of the things that should be kept in mind when teaching English to young children are:
  1. Ability to understand.
  2. Exploitation of games and movement.
  3. Indirect teaching.
  4. Development of imagination.
  5. Activation of all senses.
  6. Changing of activities.
  7. Reinforcement.
  8. Individual approach.
  9. Use of native language.
  10. Use of positive motivation.
